It is one of the ancient vernacular short story collections, and was collectively referred to as the "Three Words" together with the Stories to Enlighten the World and the Ordinary Words to Warn the World mentioned previously. The themes were originated from the folklore, or from history biography and the novels of the Tang and Song Dynasties, with a large part of creative information by the compilers. The Stories to Awaken the World shows some new features in terms of content and theme. For example, it has an article that represents the urban and rural industrial and commercial prosperity in the late Ming Dynasty— "Shi Runze Met a Friend at the Beach"; while the articles like "The Oil Vendor Enjoy the Courtesan" and "Su Xiaomei Set Three Difficulties for the Groom" create characters with new ideas and new ethics and distinctive brand of that time. It is more mature in art that the characters were more vivid with distinctive personality and the plot was designed in a more compact and clever way, showing the author's inventive mind. The author was more skilled and natural in using colloquial and life -like language, showing either implied, or funny, or passionate, or grief styles.)
